The Gardiner 4-H Club was organized on Nov. 1, 1933, nine boys and six
girls joined at the first meeting, all being first year members with the
exception of Robert Thiel and Roland Orsborn who were second year
members. The officers for the year were elected as follows-------Betty
Nebel, President --Leo Schaeffer, Vice President.--Harry Chappelear, 2nd
vice pres.--Robert Thiel, 3rd vice pres.--Louise Chappelear,
secretary--Betty Oravetz, Assist, Sec.--Leo Schaeffer, Reporter and Ina
Majors, treasurer.
The projects to be taken up were gardening and sewing. We held our
meetings on the first Friday of every month.
Early in the year the girls sewing club started making two quilts. All
the members of our club sold chances on them to raise finances. In
March, Milton Nebel joined our club. Later in March the club gave a
candy sale and made $3.00. In June we put on a program for the poultry
club meeting. The program consisted of demonstrations, club songs, and
the initiation of our new member, Milton Nebel. The Discovery Bay 4-H
Club was there and put on an entertainment also. After the program and
meeting the Gardiner 4-H girls sold pot holders and made 36 cents. May
12, we gave a dance at the “Chicken Coop” and made $16.00 clear of
expenses. The delegates for the June Club Camp at Pullman were, Betty
Nebel, Robert Thiel, and our leader Mrs. D.N. King. They had a wonderful
trip. The expenses amounted to $40.50. The July meeting of our club was
held in the form of a picnic at Beausite Lake, Chimacum, Wash. A number
of the parents attended and everyone enjoyed themselves.
On August 7th the club went to the Olympic Hot Springs with our leaders
to the leaders meeting where there were nine counties represented. The
meeting lasted two days and everyone had a good time. Expenses amounted
to $6.00. At the September meeting all the old business was taken care
of. The chances on the quilts had not all been sold but will be soon.
The last meeting was held on Oct. 6. We had a fair after the meeting to
exhibit our club work. Those winning prizes on first year work were,
Betty Oravetz, first prize on sewing. Betty Nebel, 2nd prize on sewing
exhibited. Walter Chappelear, 1st prize on vegetable collection
exhibited. Leo Schaeffer, 2nd prize on vegetable collection exhibited.
Those winning prizes on 2nd year work were----Robert Thiel, first prize,
and Roland Orsborne, 2nd prize.
This ends our first years work and we hope to have all our old members
join for the coming year and more new members also.
